Introduction to Backup in cPanel: Part 8

In this tutorial, we are going to discuss Backup tool in cPanel which is in continuation with our previous tutorial about FTP Connections {Introduction to FTP connections in cPanel: Part 7}.

This tool allows you to take a zipped backup of your entire website or a part of your site which you can save to your computer. When you back up your website you will get an extra copy of your information in case something happens to your host.

The Backup interface allows you to download and store your files, databases, forwarders in a backup file.

Full Backup:

When you back up your /home directory, the backup file includes All of the files that you own.

Download a Full Web Site Backup :

A full backup creates an archive of all of your website’s files and configuration. You can use this file to move your account to another server or to keep a local copy of your files.

Click “Download a Full Web Site Backup” to create, download, or store a full backup file. A full backup file includes your /home directory, databases, email forwarders.

When you click “Download a Full Website Backup” then the following screen will appear:

In the above screenshot, you can have a full backup which will create an archive of all the files and configurations on your website. You can only use this to move your account to another server or to keep a local copy of your files. You cannot restore full backups through your cPanel interface.

Backup Available for Download :

Generate a Full Backup:

Here you can generate a backup to the specified destination like Home Directory, Remote FTP server, Remote FTP server( Passive mode Transfer), and Secure Copy.

If you select Remote FTP server from the drop-down list under the option ” Backup Destination”, as the destination to which you want to generate the Backup then you will see following window:

Here you are required to enter an email address to which you want to receive an email regarding backup notification. You can select the option “Do not send email notification of backup completion”.

For generating the backup of Remote FTP Server enters the following information:

Remote Server: In this text box enter the name of the remote server.

Remote User: In this text box enter the name of the Remote user.

Remote Password: You are also required to enter the Remote Password in the text box provided for the “Remote Password”.

Port: In Port TextBox enter the Port number.

Remote Dir: in “Remote Dir” Text Box enter the Remote directory.

Then click “Generate Backup”. Thus you can generate a backup of Remote FTP server at the specified destination.

Click “Go Back” button for going back to the previous page of the Backup.

Account Backups:

To download an existing full backup file to your computer, select the desired backup file’s filename from the Account Backups menu.

Note:

The backup file’s creation date appears in the filename, which begins with backup-MM-DD-YYYY, where:

  • MM represents the month.
  • DD represents the day.
  • YYYY represents the year.

Partial Backups:-

Partial backup files store individual sections of your account.

Download a partial backup:-

To download your entire /home directory, your SQL databases, or your email forwarders, click the desired items. This method downloads the backup as a .gz file to your computer.

Note :

The Email Filters backup files only store the domain account-level email filters in the /etc/vfilters/$domain file. The backup file does not store user account-level email filters.

Restore a partial backup:-

To use a partial backup to restore a portion of your website, perform the following steps:

  1. Click Choose File under the appropriate heading.
    • For example, to restore a MySQL database, click Choose File under the Restore a MySQL Database heading.
  2. Select the backup file from your computer.
  3. Click Upload to restore that portion of your website.
