Procedure For Quota Modification? (Disk Space Quota) in WHM/ cPanel

Today we are going to discuss about “Quota Modification” interface in WHM. Before going ahead with the topic,

Let’s discuss why is it required to modify the Quota?

This situation occurs because the quota enforced by the kernel does not access cPanel settings. Quotas do not affect the limit changes to MySQL or PostgreSQL databases. If an account is near or over its quota then it may fail the backup process because it is not possible for the system to write the necessary files for example: database lock file.

Let’s see the use of this interface: –

This interface is used for changing the account’s disk space quota. The disk space quota specifies the maximum amount of disk space which an account can use on your server.

Important points to be considered:

  • The new quotas are enabled by default at the time of each new installation.
  • If quotas are disabled and then again enabled then the servers which are using the XFS file system and which run CentOS 7, CloudLinux 7 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7 require some additional actions to be taken for the quotas to function properly.

Let’s see how to access this interface:

Follow the below steps for accessing the “Quota Modification” interface:

Log in to WHM >> you will see the home interface of WHM >> Navigate to the “Account Information” category >> then select “Quota Modification” interface >> following interface will appear:

  • If you want to access the “Quota Modification” interface through a command line interface then run the following script:

/scripts/fixquotas

  • Then reboot your server.
  • If you want to access “Quota Modification” interface manually through the command line then for the instructions on how to perform the /usr/local/cpanel/sripts/fixquotas scripts action’s manually, read the Red Hat XFS and XFS Quota Management documentation.
  • The system sends notifications when it is ready to reboot and when the quota scan finishes and also when the quotas are functional, if you have enabled “Quota System Administration notifications”.
  • After each CloudLinux 7 update it is must to run the /usr/local/cpanel/scripts/fixquotas script and also reboot the server because the CloudLinnux 7 updates may break the quotas,
  • It is always recommended that you should set appropriate quotas for each account on your server because some users who desire to host a  video content requires more disk space than the users who only hosts a blog.

Notes:

  1. The cPanel related functions are affected by the quotas which include database space.
  2. Processes that the system runs like running PHP scripts, creates files and can also create user owned files until the number of files reaches the quota because the kernel enforced quota does not access cPanel settings.
  3. If any account is near or over its quota then the backup process for that account may fail because the system cannot write the necessary files like database lock file.
  4. If dissimilarity exists between quotas and the results of the du –sh  /home/username command then the users UID may own other files on the system. For finding the locations of the user’s files run the following command:

Find / -user username –ls

In the above command, insert actual username for the username attribute.

Let’s discuss how to assign quotas or change quotas:

For assigning new quota, perform the following steps:

  1. Select one of the following options:
  2. Select the desired account for changing a single quota and then click “Modify”.
  3. Select the “Show all Accounts” option situated at the bottom of the interface if you want to view all of your users’ quotas.
  4. Select “Show Only this Reseller’s accounts” option, if you want to view only specific reseller’s accounts.

The information about bandwidth for the selected account or accounts will display.

  • Then in the appropriate text box enter the new quota for each account in Megabytes (MB) or you can also select “Unlimited” option for granting the user unlimited disk space;
  • If you want to view all of your accounts, then click “Show Only this Reseller’s Accounts” option present under a resellers’ username for viewing only that resellers’ accounts.
  • Then click “Save”.

Important:

Rebuilding your system’s quota files is required if all of your accounts’ quotas incorrectly displays as 0. For rebuilding your system’s quota files click the “Click here” link or if this interface does not display a link, then use WHMs’ “Initial Quota Setup” interface.

Follow the below steps for accessing the WHMs’ “Initial Quota Setup” interface:

Log in to WHM >> you will see WHMs’ Home interface>> Navigate to the “Server Configuration” Category >> Select “Initial Quota Setup” option >> Following interface will appear:
