OVH Data Center at Strasbourg on fire takes 3 million+ sites offline

10 March 2021 A Black day for OVH’s Strasbourg Data Center (SBG-2) as out of 4 Buildings, SBG2 was caught on fire which destroyed the Servers and web hosting data center Infrastructure completely. Firefighters were in place immediately, however, it was too late for SBG2 to be rescued, and the fire had destroyed the facility completely.

This data center fire has impacted major companies like WP Rocket, Imagify, Rust Multiplayer Video Game & Truck Simulator Site, and a lot more…  It’s assumed that this accident has affected several major online web services belonging to the local government, cryptocurrency exchange Deribit, and the Pompidou Centre in Paris.

Octave Klaba Founder & CTO & Chairman of the Board of Directors at OVH.com has mentioned on Twitter about this incidence that no staff got injured during this accident and all members working in the datacenter are safe and isolated.

Furthermore, he has cleared on SBG1, SBG3, SBG4 status that no major impact found on them but still they are in process of resuming the powercut for them with a systematic plan.  He has mentioned that staff is working around the clock to fix the issue and restore the stopped operations with a 1-week plan as below

OVH Plan for the next 1-2 weeks at data center:

1) Rebuilding 20KV for SBG3

2) Rebuilding 240V in SBG1/SBG4

3) Verifying DWDM/routers/switches in network room A (SBG1). Checking the fibers Paris/Frankfurt

4) Rebuilding the network room B (in SBG5). Checking fibers Paris/Frankfurt

Octave Klaba also mentioned that OVH has a plan to restart the SBG1+SBG4+the network by Monday, March, 15 and SBG3 by Friday, March,19. RBX+GRA Ovh’s data center has the stock of new servers, PCC, PCI ready to be delivered for all the impacted customers. This is going to offer for free from them. He has also cleared that in the next 3 to 4 weeks they will be adding more than 10,000 servers for affected customers.

As per the last update from OVH’s team, they are working to fix the issue on APIv6, Manager, Support, etc. restoring the email services hosted in SBG2.

Backups and Emergency Site Restoration

Customer who has disaster recovery solution ready they were recommended to enable DR site to make sure smother working on website and online operations. It’s really not clear if OVH will be able to recover the data at the affected location or not.
