How to reset MySQL root Password

This will helps when you forget MySQL root password and not able to access MySQL service on the server. Here are the steps to reset MySQL password :

[email protected] [~] /etc/init.d/mysqld stop

Now start MySQL server without password:

[email protected] [~] mysqld_safe –skip-grant-tables &

[email protected] [~] mysql

After that you can get the mysql prompt then run the following command

mysql >use mysql;

mysql >update user set password=PASSWORD(“NEWPASSWORD“) where User=’root’;

mysql > quit;

[email protected] [~] /etc/init.d/mysqld stop

[email protected] [~] /etc/init.d/mysqld start

Now you can access your mysql service by using the password you have set

[[email protected] ~]# mysql -u root -p

DONE !! 😀
