This will helps when you forget MySQL root password and not able to access MySQL service on the server. Here are the steps to reset MySQL password :
root@server [~] /etc/init.d/mysqld stop
Now start MySQL server without password:
root@server [~] mysqld_safe –skip-grant-tables &
root@server [~] mysql
After that you can get the mysql prompt then run the following command
mysql >use mysql;
mysql >update user set password=PASSWORD(“NEWPASSWORD“) where User=’root’;
mysql > quit;
root@server [~] /etc/init.d/mysqld stop
root@server [~] /etc/init.d/mysqld start
Now you can access your mysql service by using the password you have set
[root@server ~]# mysql -u root -p
