Shell is command-line interpreter that provides a user interface on Linux operating system. These is where user can execute the commands on the server.
You can check the Shell you are currently logged in with as follows
echo $SHELL
root@vps [~]# echo $SHELL
/bin/bash
If you wish to change the current login Shell of the user you can use the command chsh.
root@vps [~]# chsh –help
Usage: chsh [ -s shell ] [ –list-shells ] [ –help ] [ –version ]
[ username ]
To list available shells, you can use below command
root@vps [~]# chsh –list-shells
/bin/sh
/bin/bash
/sbin/nologin
/bin/tcsh
/bin/csh
/bin/ftpsh
/usr/local/cPanel/sbin/jailshell
/usr/local/cpanel/noshell
To change the shell of the user you can use the command as follows
chsh shell ( To be assigned ) username
Like in the example below if we wish to enable jail shell access to the cpanel user test we can use the below command
chsh /usr/local/cpanel/bin/jailshell test
root@vps [~]# chsh -s /usr/local/cpanel/bin/jailshell test
