Double Check Basic WHM settings

When you first login to WHM you walked through the initial setup wizard. We are going to double check some of those basic server settings. This will show you where you can make changes to those initial settings.

Let’s go ahead and login to the WHM.

Here we are in the WHM Home Interface.

Let’s scroll down to the ‘server configuration’ and click ‘Basic Web Host Manager Set up’. The ‘Basic cPanel and WHM setup’ interface will appear. There are 3 tabs on the top of the table.

You can look at “All” the settings, just the “Contact Information” settings or “Basic Configuration” settings. I am going to leave it on “All”. The contact information section allows you to tell the server where I can contact you through various networks, such as email, SMS messaging, AOL messenger, Pushbullet, Postback URL and ICQ.

To enter multiple entries for any of these use a coma, to separate them. We will cover the configuration of alerts in another video. The rest of the settings should be found from the basic configuration. Scroll down and click ‘Save’ after you finished making changes.

Let’s double check your network resolver. These are the external DNS servers that your server would use to look up the IP addresses of Hostnames that it cannot resolve on itself.

Scroll down to the Networking setup and click “Resolver Configuration”. A new interface will appear.

Then click “Proceed”. Check your primary and secondary resolvers. Make any changes that you need to and if you need a 3rd resolver, put that in the tertiary resolver text box.

Then click continue. A confirmation message will appear.

Now we will double check the IP addresses that you entered in the Wizard.

Scroll down to IP functions and click “add a new IP address”. A new interface will appear. You can enter a single IP address or multiple addresses here.

Select the appropriate subnet mask as for the addresses. Now it’s really important you set the right subnet mask or the IP address or the IP addresses may not be reachable. Your hosting provider should give you that number or you can search Google for the phrase “Subnet mask calculator”. Ok. That we have set the subnet mask you can exclude IP addresses from the range that you entered. And click “submit”. A confirmation message will appear.

Some of the IP addresses that you added might be needed for things other than accounts such as DNS server; you should exclude those addresses from the list of addresses to set up an account.

Scroll down to IP function and click “show/edit Reserved IPs”. A new interface will appear.

Select the check boxes of the addresses that you wish to reserve and then give yourself a note to why you reserving this such as DNS server or Anonymous FTP. Then click “Save”. A confirmation message will appear.

The next step in the initial wizard was to setup nameservers. Scroll down to “Service Configuration” and click “Nameserver Selection”. A new interface will appear.

Read the information about each type of the nameserver or you can choose the disable nameservers if you plan to run third-party external nameservers. Make your selection and then click ‘Save’. The confirmation message will appear. I have already selected the ‘BIND’ therefore following message appeared.

Let’s talk about the FTP service. This allows you to upload and download files with FTP protocol. Now there are some security vulnerabilities with FTP. The most important is that it’s not encrypted and somebody might possibly still your username and password. So if you can we recommend that you allow your customers to use web disk or SFTP to securely upload/download the files instead of using FTP.

To change your FTP server selection or to disable FTP entirely, scroll down to “Service Configuration” and click “FTP Server Selection”. A new interface will appear.

Read the information about each type of FTP server or you can choose to disable FTP if you plan not to use it. Make your selection and click ‘Save’. A confirmation message will appear.

Now we will check the ‘A’ entries before your hostname. Scroll down to “DNS Functions” and click “Add an A entry for your Hostname”. A new interface will appear.

Check the hostname at the top of the interface. Then click add an entry. A confirmation message will appear.

If you forgot to set up quotas as a part of the initial setup wizard you can do it in WHM. Scroll down to “Server Configuration” and then click “Initial Quota setup” A new interface will appear.

Then click “Proceed” that should cover most of the basic settings that you configure in the initial setup wizard.
