Changing Hostname and Nameserver in WHM
In this blog I will explain you how to change hostname, nameserver on WHM.
Let’s discuss about Hostname and Nameservers in brief:
Hostname: It is important to choose a hostname that you will not be using for any account. You should choose something that will be socially acceptable, as it will appear in all mail headers. Your hostname must be a FQDN. In English, a hostname should consist of a name and a domain name. All valid hostnames should have 2 dots in them. Hostnames should never begin with “www”. Hostnames should also not begin with a digit, nor end with a hyphen (“-”).
The default name was set when you were installing Ubuntu. You can easily change it to whatever you want in both Desktop & Server by editing the hosts and hostname files.
This will change the hostname until next reboot. The change won’t be visible immediately in your current terminal. Start a new terminal to see the new hostname.
The hostname change process may take a few seconds to complete. You will see the status and details once the hostname has been changed.
Nameservers: it’s where the DNS server records for your domain are stored, allowing you to decide which hosting providers controls your webs pace and email. All domain registrars should provide you the ability to change at least two nameserver entries on your domain name, and hosting companies should offer you at least two nameservers to point to.
3. Then click to change hostname on menu.
4. Click ‘Change’ button.
5. A confirmation message will appear.
6. Now click on ‘Add an entry for your Hostname’. A new interface will appear.
7. Click ‘add entry’. A confirmation message will appear.

9. To change nameserver and email click ‘Basic Web Host Manager Setup’ button on menu.
Change the ‘email address’ to a ‘new email address’. I don’t want to change it. If you would like to change it, you can.
10. For changing nameservers scroll down and under ‘nameservers ‘section. A new interface will appear.
11. Change the nameservers as you want. I don’t want to change them. I am leaving them as it is.
12. Click ‘Save’. A confirmation message will appear ‘modifying’.
13. Go back to Basic Web Host Manager Setup, Click ‘Configure address records’ for 1st nameserver and enter an IPv4 address to create an ‘A’ record textbox. As I have not changed the IP address, I am keeping it as it is. If you have changed it, then enter that new IP address to create an ‘A’ record textbox.
Then click ‘Configure Address Records’. It will take minute or two.
After few minutes following message will appear: ‘IP addresses have been assigned to the nameserver’.
As like the 1st nameserver make changes in 2nd nameserver- click on the ‘configure address records’. Then enter an IPv4 address to create an ‘A’ record textbox. Enter the same IP address.
Click ’configure address records’ a configuration message will appear. Click ‘close’.
14. Now configure your DNS on domain. Go in users’ cPanel. Add ‘A’ record, add the new IP address. Click ‘Save’. A confirmation message will appear.
15. Scroll down to server name which we have created in the Zone file records section.
16. Now run a command in SSH ping server name – you will see that it is pinging.
17. After testing the hostname and nameserver records visit your WHM.
18. In new browser window open WHM; you can access your WHM account with root. Now you are in your WHM interface. Hostname has been changed and it’s working.
